Ichiro’s Yankee debut at Safeco Field prompted a standing ovation for the longtime Mariner.

Tonight on Mariners Mondays on ROOT Sports a look back at last year’s blockbuster trade that sent Ichiro to the New York Yankees.

With the Yankees in town for a three-game series, an emotional Ichiro met with media to talk about his storied career with the Mariners. A few hours later, he emerged from the visitor’s dugout to the roar of the crowd. And, in typical Ichiro fashion, singled to center. The Yankees, who had just been swept by the Oakland A’s, went on to win the game 4-1.

The next night had a different result (a Mariners 4-2 win) and a different dramatic story-line. Felix Hernandez was matched against former Mariners pitcher Freddy Garcia. Not as sharp as usual, Felix allowed a solo home run in the 1st inning and worked out of jams in 4th and 5th innings. Then he hit Ichiro, Derek Jeter and finally Alex Rodriguez, breaking A-Rod’s hand with an 88 mph changeup that got away from him.

Mariners Mondays reviews the events of the emotional trade and the outcome of the next day’s game tonight on ROOT SPORTS.
