Sunday, February 24, 2013 / 36 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 43 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)

Morning Workout:
Today the guys ran through a pretty basic workout in the morning…stretch at 9:30, a quick infield-outfield and then batting practice from 10:15-11:15. The guys broke for lunch at 11:15 and headed over to Peoria Stadium for the game vs. the Padres at 1:05. On home game days, this will be the basic routine. When there is a road game, the team will stretch 30 minutes earlier and the bus will leave for the road game between 11-11:30 depending on what side of the Valley the game will be played.

ESPN the Magazine:
A small crew and photographer from ESPN the Magazine were in camp today to do a photo shoot with Brendan Ryan and Dustin Ackley. The Mariners middle-infield combo were both finalists for the American League Gold Glove Award at their positions last season, and considered two of the best at their positions. The photo shoot detailed how Ryan and Ackley turn the double play.

Game Recap:
Raul Ibañez
hit a three-run home run in the first inning to jump-start the Seattle Mariners to an 8-3 victory over the San Diego Padres to improve to 2-1 in Cactus League play. The Mariners scored all five of the first inning runs before an out was recorded by Padres starter (and former Mariner ace) Freddy Garcia. Kyle Seager and Robert Andino led off with back-to-back singles before Ibañez deposited a 0-1 pitch over the right field fence. Michael Morse and Michael Saunders followed with back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 5-0. 11 different players recorded at least one hit, and five players tallied multi-hit games in the win. He has his Number:
The 3-run home run by Raul Ibañez came off his former teammate Freddy Garcia. It turns out that Raul has had quite a lot of success off Freddy in his career, although Raul was pretty quick to praise the right-hander about his career when talking with reporter. Raul is a career .559 hitter (19×34) with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 10 RBI all-time vs. Garcia (not including today’s HR).

After a few days of pretty nice weather, the winds blew into Peoria overnight and stayed around for a while. Temperature at first pitch was in the high 50’s and seemed to get colder as the game went on. Winds were blowing out to right field, but even no wind was needed on the home run by Raul Ibañez.

On Tap Tomorrow (Monday, February 25):
Tomorrow will basically be a carbon-copy of today’s schedule…9:30 stretch, BP from 10:15-11:15, break for lunch at 11:15 and a 1:05 pm game (12:05 in Seattle) vs. the Angels. Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled to start on the mound for Seattle vs. Angels right-hander Garrett Richards.
