Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 10
Friday, February 22, 2013 / 38 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 45 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)
The squad moved back to the upper fields (#1 & #2) for the morning workout. This will be the normal routine on game days moving forward, and as some like to say, Groundhogs Day has commenced. The normal routine will be stretch at 9 am (road game) or 9:30 (home game), followed by various drills and then batting practice. After a break for lunch, the players made the short trek to Peoria Stadium for the first Cactus League game vs. the Padres. Prior to stretch the team had a 30-minute meeting with the Major League Baseball Alumni Association.
Mariners Drop Cactus League Opener:
The Mariners dropped their Cactus League opener today to the Padres, 9-3. Casper Wells hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning. The two teams play the second game of a three-game series tomorrow at 1:05 pm MT/12:05 pm PT.
Tweet of the Day:
Jack Donahue of Kirkland had a day he’ll soon never forget, meeting players and getting his own locker in the Mariners clubhouse as part of the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Jack got the chance to meet several players, and received a lot of nice gifts including a signed bat and some items from Kyle Seager and Michael Saunders. It was pretty cool to see how much fun the players had with Jack, knowing how much the day meant to him.
Sunny, blue skies and just cool enough to call a little crisp in the morning. Game time temperature was 56° with a light wind blowing out to left field.
Happy Birthday Carlos:
Mariners outfielder Carlos Peguero celebrated his 26th birthday on Friday…and recorded two walks in his two plate appearances. Happy Birthday big fella!
It was nice to hear our new announcer Aaron Goldsmith take to the airwaves in his Mariners debut today. Goldsmith will partner with Rick Rizzs on the radio side all season. I know this, if I had a voice like Aaron’s, I wouldn’t stop talking. You can also follow him on twitter at @aaronmgoldsmith.
On Tap Tomorrow (Saturday, February 23):
The Mariners play the Padres in the second of a three-game weekend series, this time with the Mariners wearing the gray pants as the road team. RHP Blake Beavan will make his Cactus League debut against Padres right-hander Tyson Ross. The game will be broadcast in the Seattle area on ESPN 710 Seattle with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith calling the action.
The team will again take to the practice fields in the morning for a light workout, beginning with stretch on Field #1 at 9:30 am. Batting practice is scheduled to take place on Fields #1 & #2 from 10:15-11:15 for the fans in Peoria who wish to watch.
