The Boys of Spring.

The Boys of Spring.

Monday, February 18, 2013 / 4 Days ‘til Cactus League Opener (Friday, Feb. 22 vs. San Diego) / 42 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 51 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)

Live BP:
The highlight of today’s workout was the Mariners hitters facing live pitching in batting practice, sort of. Most of hitters used the drill to track the ball and get a feel for timing, but some took their hacks. The group of pitchers that took the mound included right-hander Blake Beavan, left-hander Oliver Perez and non-roster invitees D.J. Mitchell and Andrew Carraway.

Cactus League Media Day:
General Manager Jack Zduriencik and Manager Eric Wedge took part in the first Cactus League Media Day at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. Major League Baseball put the event together and brought all managers and general managers from the 15 Cactus League teams into one place for the local and national media. It was a great event, and kept Eric and Jack busy asking several questions about the 2013 Mariners.

Seattle TV Stations Arrive:
It was a big media day in camp, as a pair of Seattle TV stations arrived in Peoria. King 5 sent reporter Chris Egan and photographer Alan Reed, while Q13 sent reporters Aaron Levine and Michelle Ludtka. Look for all the interviews on the sports segments of both channels in the coming days.

Team China vs. Team Netherlands:
With the World Baseball Classic just around the corner, there was a lot of red (Team China) and orange (Team Netherlands) running around the Peoria Sports Complex today. The teams played an exhibition game in the afternoon getting warmed up for the WBC. It was nice to see Mariners minor leaguer Kalian Sams representing his home country, and also pretty cool to see Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven, who is the Dutch pitching coach.

Felix Bullpen Wednesday:
Manager Eric Wedge said that Felix is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session on Wednesday. Like recent spring trainings, Felix will ease into game action and as you know from his 3-0, 1.59 ERA record in 5 career Opening Day starts, he’ll be ready to go when the 2013 season comes around.

Another beautiful day in the Valley of the Sun for President’s Day. The morning workout started with temperatures in the mid 50’s and climbed into the mid 70’s by the afternoon. Highs tomorrow are again expected in the 70’s, but rain is in the forecast for Wednesday.

Tweets of the Day:

Quote of the Day:
“Be aggressive, right out of the chute. Nothing has changed.”
Michael Saunders talking about his hitting approach from last year carrying over to this season.

Get Your New Glove:
Wilson Sporting Goods made its annual stop in camp delivering custom baseball gloves to players and fitting others for new models. A lot of players walked away with a big smile on their face after receiving their new leather.

On Tap Tomorrow (Tuesday, February 19):
Tomorrow will be a full day, with the annual photo day starting at 7 am and workouts taking place from 9:30-12:30. Several photographers will take photos of the players in their white uniforms for various publications and even some baseball cards. We’ll be sure to pass along some photos from the event. The Live BP session should also be interesting to watch as Erasmo Ramirez, Stephen Pryor, Carter Capps, Taijuan Walker, Charlie Furbush, Josh Kinney, Brandon Maurer, James Paxton, Tom Wilhelmsen, Lucas Luetge, Danny Hultzen and Bobby LaFromboise are all scheduled to throw.
