Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 3
Friday, February 15, 2013 / 7 Days ‘til Cactus League Opener (Feb. 22 vs. San Diego) / 45 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 54 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)
Last Day of Just Pitchers & Catchers:
It was much of the same as the first two days of camp, with pitchers and catchers going through various drills on the lower fields at the Peoria Sports Complex. Pitchers, including Felix Hernandez, went through fielding drills and catchers were lined up to catch the bullpens.
The first group of pitchers that threw bullpens today included Jeremy Bonderman, Blake Beavan, Jon Garland, Kameron Loe, Hector Noesi and Oliver Perez.
The catchers were again the last ones off the field taking batting practice on Field #6 to conclude the workout. Tomorrow the whole gang is scheduled to hit the fields for the first full-squad workout.
Felix on Field
Felix Hernandez made his first spring appearance on the field, going through a quick workout that included long toss with Hisashi Iwakuma and P.F.P drills. He also met with a large group of media following the workout. Now it is back to business for the ace pitcher and focus on the upcoming 2013 season.
Another beautiful day in Peoria with hardly a cloud in the sky and temperatures in the low-to-mid 70’s. More sunshine and baseball in the forecast for the next few days.
College Baseball Opening Day:
Today was the official Opening Day for most Division 1 college baseball programs, and several Mariners have been keeping track of their schools. Right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom sent out a tweet (below) to wish the University of Texas-Arlington baseball program good luck. Left-handed pitcher Brian Moran is also paying close attention to his alma mater North Carolina, especially their starting third baseman, his brother Colin Moran.

Quotes of the Day:
– Pitching Coach Carl Willis asking Felix Hernandez if he felt good
– Felix’s immediate response with a smile
“I just want to be here…Forever.”
– Felix Hernandez talking about being a Mariner
Members of the Mariners Marketing Department, including Michael Ferguson, Ben Mertens and Olav Nossum, were busy shutting players over the auxiliary clubhouse at Peoria Stadium to shoot video for the new HD Scoreboard. Following the time spent with the marketing crew, a lot of the players sat down with ROOT Sports for an interview with Jen Mueller.
Physicals for Position Players:
The remaining position players (and staff) that did not already have their physical exam got that checked off the list today. Jason Bay, Mike Jacobs and Robert Andino were some of the last remaining position players to appear that we had not yet seen in the clubhouse.
On Tap Tomorrow (Feb. 16):
Tomorrow is the first full-squad workout with the team scheduled to hit the field at 10 am after a team meeting. The team will continue to break into two squads during stretch, with the position players down the right field line and pitchers down the left field line (on Field #3). It should be a pretty busy day on the four lower fields.
