Thursday, February 14, 2013 / 8 Days ‘til Cactus League Opener (Feb. 22 vs. San Diego) / 46 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 53 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)

Back to Business:
After a whirlwind couple of days with a bevy of roster moves and the big signing of Felix Hernandez, it was back to normal business in Peoria today. The players hit the back fields at 9:30 am for stretch, went through P.F.P drills and the pitchers threw bullpens. The catchers were the last ones off the field after taking batting practice and conditioning.

Pitchers that threw bullpens this morning included left-handers Charlie Furbush, Joe Saunders, Danny Hultzen, Lucas Luetge and Danny Hultzen. The right-handed group of pitchers included Erasmo Ramirez, Tom Wilhelmsen, Carter Capps, Brandon Maurer, Taijuan Walker and Hisashi Iwakuma.

Where’s Felix?:
After a yesterday’s news conference in Seattle (announcing his 7-year contract extension), Felix Hernandez flew back to Arizona today and is scheduled to be on the field tomorrow morning.

Another beautiful day in Peoria with hardly a cloud in the sky and temperatures in the mid-to-high 60’s. The forecast calls for temps in the 70’s each of the next five days!

Tweet of the Day:

Quote of the Day:
“With our catchers, you’ve got some guys that have big league time, and you’ve got some guys that will play in the big leagues for a long time; so that’s a nice combination. I look at the five catchers that are in camp right now and they are all quality catchers. They are already big leaguers, or they are going to be big leaguers. To have five quality catchers in camp, that’s impressive. There isn’t one guy that sticks out, and that’s a good thing. They are all doing a good job. We’ve talked about winning with pitching and defense, but really we’ll win with pitching, catching and defense.”

Media in Camp:
A producer and camera from ESPN Baseball Tonight were stopped by in the morning to talk to Blake Beavan, Justin Smoak and Brendan Ryan about Felix signing his contract extension and the start of spring training. There were also about 15 Japanese media members here to watch Hisashi Iwakuma throw his first bullpen of the spring.

More Position Players Arrive:
Outfielders Michael Morse, Franklin Gutierrez and Raul Ibañez all made their first appearance in the clubhouse prior to tomorrow’s report date. Roughly 20 of the 23 position players on the 61-player spring training roster have already reported to camp. .

Happy Birthday:
Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln and TV broadcaster Dave Sims celebrated birthday’s today. And just a random fact (thanks to google) that today is the 154th birthday of George Ferris, an American engineer who created the first Ferris Wheel.

Happy Valentine’s Day:
There was a heart-shaped box of chocolates in the middle of the clubhouse, no doubt serving as a reminder to pick up something nice on the way home for their significant other.

On Tap Tomorrow (Feb. 15):
Tomorrow will be a pretty similar day in terms of timing to the last two days, with the team taking the field at 9:30 am for stretch (on Field #3). A total of 15 pitchers are scheduled to throw their second bullpen sessions, including Blake Beavan, Jeremy Bonderman, Jon Garland, Kameron Loe, Andrew Carraway and Carson Smith (among others). Position players are scheduled to officially report throughout the day, and those that have already not done so, will take their physicals. The first full-squad workout will be held Saturday morning starting with stretch at 10 am.
