Felix: True to the Blue
A couple of weeks ago the Mariners marketing department shared with us the tagline for the 2013 advertising and marketing efforts. The plan was to introduce the new tagline at the same time as the TV commercial spots are completed and previewed, sometime in mid-March.
The tagline is “True to the Blue” which in this case, of course, is “Mariners Blue.” When the seven-year agreement for Felix Hernandez to remain in Seattle was finally announced on Tuesday, an immediate connection was made between King Felix’s commitment and the tagline.
During the news conference yesterday (Wednesday), as Felix was expressing his genuine love for his family, the fans, the City of Seattle, the people in the Mariners organization and at Safeco Field, etc., “True to the Blue” crossed my mind several times. There is something special in sports when a player spends his entire career wearing the uniform of the same team, and while we don’t have a crystal ball, it certainly appears that Felix has a chance to be added to that very exclusive list….along with recent players like Edgar Martinez (Mariners), Derek Jeter (Yankees), Chipper Jones (Braves), Cal Ripken Jr. (Orioles) and Tony Gwynn (Padres), as well as legends like Stan Musial (Cardinals), Yogi Berra (Yankees), George Brett (Royals), Roberto Clemente (Pirates) and Ted Williams (Red Sox) to name just a few.
As everyone now knows, Felix signed with the Mariners at age 16, reached the big leagues in 2005 at the age of 19, and is now signed through the 2019 season. A long way from his native Venezuela, he and his wife now live in Bellevue, WA, with their daughter Mia and son Jeremy (who wants to be a hitter, not a pitcher).
Felix is the best example of “True to the Blue”, a living example of some who believes in Mariners Baseball and in this great part of the country. “Long live the King.”
