Mariners Spring Training Update – Reporting Day
Tuesday, February 12, 2013 / 10 Days ‘til Cactus League Opener (Feb. 22 vs. San Diego) / 48 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 55 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)
The big news of the day in Seattle (and Peoria), and well for that matter, the baseball world, was that the Mariners and ace right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez have reached an agreement on a new contract. What exactly does that mean? Tomorrow Felix will sign the new contract and hold a news conference in Seattle beginning at 2 pm on Wednesday, February 13, at Safeco Field.
Hot Stove League:
The Hot Stove League radio show returns to the airwaves tonight on ESPN 710 Seattle and online at Mariners.com. Guests are scheduled to include Jack Zduriencik, Robby Thompson, Brendan Ryan and Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson. Rick Rizzs, Shannon Drayer and Matt Pitman will host the two-hour show from 7-9 p.m. PT.
Busy Day in Peoria:
In addition to the big news about Felix Hernandez agreeing to a new contract, there was a flurry of roster moves today. In the PR world, it was a rare four news release day. The roster moves included the following:
- LHP Joe Saunders signed as a free agent (will wear #23)
- RHP Jon Garland signed as a minor league free agent with Spring Training invite (will wear #20)
- RHP Kameron Loe signed as a minor league free agent with a Spring Training invite (will wear #31)
- 1B/DH Mike Carp designated for assignment
Stat of the Day:
We aren’t in full statistical mode, but in honor of King Felix, here is a look at how his numbers over the last four seasons compare to the rest of baseball. Spoiler alert, he is one of the best:
It was a chilly morning in Peoria, with all the fields covered with a coat of frost (which is a rare spring training site). A few groundskeepers from the City of Peoria were riding around making sure nobody was on the frosted playing fields. The sun eventually made an appearance and temperatures were in the mid 50’s all day. The temperature is expected to be in the mid 60’s tomorrow and climb into the 70’s by the weekend!
Tweet of the Day:
On Tap Tomorrow (Feb. 13):
The players hit the fields at the Peoria Sports Complex for the first time (officially) in 2013. After a team meeting from 9-9:30, the pitchers and catchers will go through drills, throw bullpens and work on getting back into baseball shape.
