Spring Training Update (early edition)

Monday, February 11, 2013 / 49 Days ‘til Opening Night (April 1 at Oakland) / 56 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Houston)

Setting the Scene:
We wanted to get a jump-start on the spring blog updates, well, because we are down here and we had a chance to snap a few photos (and set up our offices for the next 7 weeks). Tomorrow the Pitchers and Catchers are scheduled to report to camp for physicals, and the first day on the field will be bright and early Wednesday. There were still a lot of players milling around the clubhouse getting workouts in and setting up their lockers. Justin Smoak, Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager – who are all situated next to each other in the clubhouse — were among the position players going through workouts today. Several pitchers did some light tossing, with a few donning winter caps (see weather note below).

It was a very Seattle-like gray day here in Peoria, even with a few sprinkles which is rare for the Valley of the Sun. A lot of the locals were complaining how “cold” it was, complete with a few winter jackets that looked like they had to be dusted off. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high 40’s, with overnight lows expected in the mid 30’s. Kind of crazy for Arizona, but it is forecasted to reach the mid 60’s by Tuesday and Wednesday, and then the 70’s by midweek.

New BP Caps:
As players arrive, they are all issued new workout gear and the freshly designed BP cap. Players gave the new look a thumbs up. You can see a few pictures of the new cap in the photo gallery below. The new BP caps will be available for purchase on MLB.com and at Spring Training sites starting next week, and at all major retailers beginning in March.

Tweet of the Day:

On Tap Tomorrow (Feb. 12):
Pitchers and catchers will report for physicals tomorrow, so it will be a long day for the medical staff. The exams are scheduled to begin at 10:30 am and finish well after 6 pm. The players will officially hit the field at 9:30 am (Arizona time) on Wednesday.
