Mariners Minor Leaguers Begin Instructional League
The Mariners opened their annual Instructional League in Peoria, Arizona yesterday. Among those participating are 11 of the top 16 picks from the Mariners 2012 Draft class, including infielders Joe DeCarlo, Patrick Kivlehan, Tim Lopes and Taylor Ard and pitchers Edwin Diaz and Tyler Pike.
Instructional League allows for players to work on areas of their game with several coaches upon the end of the Minor League season. The league runs from Sept. 17 through Oct. 13 and includes games against Minor League players from the Padres, Royals, White Sox and Indians organizations.
“We are proud of what each of these players accomplished this season and look forward to working with them individually during Instructional League,” said Mariners Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn. “Each player will set goals and work on individual areas, while improving all aspects of their game.”
Instructional League games are played on weekdays at 12:30 pm and on Saturdays at 10 am. The game on October 6 is at 9 am. All Instructional League home games are played on the practice fields and are free to the public.
Eight teams with facilities located largely in the West Valley of Phoenix have also come together to form a co-op league to give some of their players an additional chance to compete (SEA/MIL, KC/TEX, LAD/CWS & CLE/CIN). The Mariners and the Milwaukee Brewers will also combine to create a co-op team that will play during the same time as Instructional League.
John Hicks, Steven Proscia, Leon Landry and James Jones will highlights the position players on the roster, while Taijuan Walker, Jordan Pries, Stephen Landazuri and Matt Brazis will lead the pitching staff.
Mariners co-op team will play Monday-Friday with “home games” alternating between the Peoria Sports Complex and Maryvale Stadium. Each game begins at 12:30 pm.
The Arizona Fall League is set to begin its 20th season on Tuesday, October 9. Each AFL team is comprised of 5 major league organizations working cooperatively. Right-handed pitchers Logan Bawcom and Carson Smith, left-handed pitchers Bobby LaFromboise and James Paxton, catcher Mike Zunino and infielders Vinnie Catricala, Nick Franklin and Stefen Romero will represent the Mariners on the Peoria Javelinas roster. Lance Painter will serve as Pitching Coach for the Javelinas.
