Northwest Kids Pitch, Hit & Run at Safeco Field
Boys and girls from all over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia compete Sunday at the Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Team Championship Competition after the Seattle Mariners vs. San Francisco Giants game at Safeco Field.
The 24 competitors qualified for Sunday’s Team Championship by placing first in their age divisions at their local competitions and becoming the All-Around Champions at their sectional competitions, which were held during May and June. Only the top four performers in each age group from the sectional competitions in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia qualified for the Mariners Team Championship Competition.
These youngsters competing at Safeco Field on Sunday have the opportunity to advance to the National Finals, which will take place during MLB’s 2012 All-Star Week festivities in Kansas City. The scores from the Safeco Field competition will be compared with the scores of all competitors across the country in each age group. The four highest scores in each age group among all competitors will vie for the National Championships during All-Star Week in July.
Pitch, Hit & Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. The grassroots program is designed to provide youth across North America with an integrated competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills. Children compete in four age groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition including the Local, Sectional, Team Championship and National Finals.
