Youth movement at Safeco Field

Safeco Field was hopping this morning before today’s game with almost 10,000 students from elementary and high schools from around Western Washington. They were here for the 6th Annual Weather Education Day, and the 7th Annual DECA Day.

KOMO 4 Weather expert Steve Pool led a lesson for elementary students about atmospheric conditions that give the Puget Sound area such interesting weather. Kids were treated to science experiments with collapsing soda cans and a cloud in a jar, and videos of some of the strange and wonderful things that make our Northwest weather.

DECA, an organization for high school and college students that helps prepare them for their future careers, heard from a panel of Seattle Mariners front office members, including Vice President of Human Resources Marianne Short. Short regaled the group with a cautionary tale of actual job applicants gone wrong. Among Short’s advice to the kids: clean up your Facebook page and Twitter feeds now and be nice to your classmates. You never know who might be making hiring decisions in the future.
