Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 35

Day 35 / Saturday, March 17, 2012 / 11 Days ‘til Opening Night in Tokyo (March 28 vs. Oakland) / 27 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 13 vs. Oakland)

Weather:
First pitch at Camelback Ranch was 71° with cloudy skies. A rarity may be on the way in the Valley of the Sun, as rain showers and temperatures in the 50’s are expected in the Phoenix area on tomorrow and Monday. The Mariners had one rainout last spring (March 21) and only four spring weather cancellations dating back to 2003.

Tweet of the Day:

Good Blake, Bad Offensive Day:
Mariners starter Blake Beavan had a strong outing, allowing just one run in four frames, but the Mariners only managed two hits as they were shut out for the first time this spring, 5-0 to the Chicago White Sox in Cactus League play at Camelback Ranch. The loss, in front of a crowd of 8,332 fans, dropped Seattle to 11-6-1 on the spring. Left-handed Rule 5 selection Lucas Luetge tossed two perfect innings (6th & 7th) while striking out two and right-hander Shawn Camp worked a scoreless ninth inning despite allowing two hits. Infielder Alex Liddi (1×4, 2B) and outfielder Michael Saunders (1×3) collected the only hits for the Mariners.

Luck of the Irish:
Perhaps “Feeling Blue” would be a better description than “Lucky Green”. After today’s loss (5-0 at the White Sox), Seattle’s St. Patrick’s Day record fell to 13-20 all-time, and the Mariners have now lost 9 of their last 10 on St. Paddy’s day. Bring on the green Root Beer.

Leaving on a Jet Plane:
The Mariners fly to Japan on Thursday (March 22)…buses roll from Peoria at noon, and hopefully wheels up at 1 pm…the traveling party is scheduled to arrive at Narita Airport at 6 pm on March 23.

It’s interesting that Blowers and Sims will be calling the two Japan games from the ROOT studios in Bellevue instead of traveling with the team and calling from the box. Are there specific reasons for these arrangements? Will we notice it while watching at home?
