Quote of the Day:
“My first two boys were born in Seattle, so that’s why I wanted to come here. I never thought to end my career here, but I feel like I have to. I learned a lot of good things from Jay Buhner and all the players when I was here — Edgar Martinez, Junior, A-Rod. They were fun years for me and the fans in Seattle.” Carlos Guillen talking about the Mariners organization after announcing his retirement from baseball after a 14-year Major League career.
Felix and Ichiro Key in Mariners 8-6 Win Over Reds:
Felix Hernandez struck out 4 and allowed only one baserunner in 3.0 scoreless innings and Ichiro went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI to lead the Mariners to an 8-6 Cactus League victory over the Reds. The Mariners are now 4-1 in Cactus League play. Hernandez hit the first batter he faced (on the first pitch), but settled down to retire the last nine batters he faced, including four strikeouts. Left-hander Philippe Valiquette recorded the save pitching a scoreless 9th inning. The Mariners jumped out to the early lead with a 5-run third inning, including three sacrifice flies and a run-scoring single from Ichiro. Seattle added a run in the 4th and two more in the 5th inning on a 2-run double by catcher Adam Moore. Moore, who hit a solo home run yesterday, finished 2-for-2 with 2 runs, a double and 2 RBI.
