Mariners Extend Spring Training Lease Agreement With City of Peoria
The Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and City of Peoria today announced lease extensions that will keep the two teams at the Peoria Sports Complex for another 20 years.
When the Mariners and Padres first went to Peoria in 1994, there wasn’t much out there except cotton fields and orange groves.
Today, a thriving community has grown up around the complex.
As part of the lease agreement, the City of Peoria will make extensive renovations to the offices and facilities for both teams. Those updates will be finished by Spring Training 2014. There will also be improvements made to the ballpark including seating enhancements, party deck, façade improvements, plaza area and upgrades to the field and lighting systems.
The Mariners team facility renovations are still on the drawing board, but when the project is finished, it is hoped it will qualify for LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system for design, construction and operation of green buildings. The changes should lead to big improvements in energy and water conservation at the new facility.
The Peoria Sports Complex is 145 acres just south of Bell Road. The complex includes 12 Major League sized practice fields and hosts Mariners and Padres minor league operations year round, as well as amateur baseball activities, festivals, arts and crafts shows, concerts, a Sports Fest, car and RV shows, holiday events, fundraisers and corporate functions.
