New Fielding Bible Projects Mariners #2 in Defensive Runs Saved This Season

The new Fielding Bible – Volume III by John Dewan and Ben Jedlovec projects the Mariners to be the second best fielding team in Major League Baseball.

Using the metric “Defensive Runs Saved” for each position on all 30 teams and stats developed by Baseball Info Solutions (BIS), and assuming current rosters and projected starters for each team, the 464-page “bible of defense” projects how many runs its present defense will save (or cost) a team.

At the end of the 2011 season, the Bill James Handbook 2012 also rated Brendan Ryan and Dustin Ackley as one of the best defensive combinations up the middle.

In The Bill James Handbook 2012, Bill James and Baseball Info Solutions track Defensive Runs Saved to see who the best-fielding shortstops and second basemen were in 2011. In short, Defensive Runs Saved is an estimate of the number of runs each fielder saves with his defense, combining John Dewan’s Plus/Minus System with analyses of bunts, double plays, and more to form a complete evaluation of a fielder.

Brendan Ryan was tops among shortstops with 18 Runs Saved, ahead of the second-place finisher, Atlanta’s Alex Gonzalez (15), and the third-best shortstop, Andrus (13). Dustin Ackley tied for fifth among second-basemen with 10 Runs Saved. But together, Ryan-Ackley was the second-most deadly double-play duo in the majors. Ryan is also the three-year leader among all shortstops with 65 Runs Saved over that time.
