Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 14

Day 14 / Saturday, February 25, 2012 / 32 Days ‘til Opening Night in Tokyo (March 28 vs. Oakland) / 48 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 13 vs. Oakland)

The guys hit the fields with the temperatures in the mid 60’s and a few clouds in the sky. Highs are expected in mid 70’s today, but a lot of wind is also in the local forecast for this afternoon.

The Day:
With the first Intrasquad game held yesterday, and another tomorrow (also : Feb. 28 & Feb. 29), the club went through a pretty quick workout today. After stretching and loosening up, the infielders and pitchers went through pickoffs and rundowns and the outfielders worked on grounders. During the rundown drills, players from mini-camp ran the bases. Those players included Brad Miller, Steven Proscia, Stefan Romero, Eric Campbell, Ramon Morla, Gabriel Noriega, Bryan Brito and Martin Peguero. Following batting practice, most of the position players ran sprints under the watchful eye of Performance Specialist Allan Wirtala. A handful of position players and pitchers also had a yoga session in part of the minor league clubhouse.

Additional Tidbits:
Outfielder Trayvon Robinson ran with the training staff before the workout and participated in the rest of the workout…Robinson has been slowed recently by a tight hamstring…Brendan Ryan took a day off from throwing, but participated in all of the infield drills…Carlos Guillen was held out of today’s workout as a precautionary measure with calf tightness…LHP George Sherrill was the only pitcher to throw a bullpen today.

Manager Eric Wedge.

Quote of the Day:
“Ah, I don’t even know. I’ve got the list inside…Quite a few of them.” Manager Eric Wedge commenting on what pitchers take to the hill in tomorrow’s Intrasquad game. The list posted in the clubhouse shows that 18 different pitchers are scheduled to throw 1.0 inning each tomorrow.

Short Day For Some, Long For Others:
While the Major League camp was off the filed by noon, the minor league mini-camp was just beginning. For a number of the coaches, this means another two-a-day practice. The group of minor league coaches and coordinators that are helping out in Major League camp, also run the mini-camp led by Field Coordinator Jack Howell. For these coaches, the da often starts around 6:30 am and does not end until around 4 p.m.

GM Jack Zduriencik and Asst. GM Jeff Kingston.

Camp Guests:
Pretty slow morning in camp with only one guest…representatives from the Glomar Bat Company were set up outside the clubhouse talking to players about using their bats.

Love to see my favorite team getting ready to show what they got this year! I am the opposite of dissapointed with all of these young players and am very proud of our coaching staff including Wedge, Datz, Zduriencik, and many more! Future World Series team in years to come is making me a very happy Seattle Mariners fan! Have a good Spring and an excellent year! I will be waking up at 2am at the end of March to watch the Mariners battle the A’s and the next day at 3am!!!
